Fire/Rescue

The Fire Rescue program has a long history of success at the Kankakee Area Career Center.  This is evidenced by the student's success in the State and National SkillsUSA competitions and the continued success of our KACC alumni. It is no wonder area fire departments offer internship opportunities to our successful students during their second year in the program.

By the end of this two-year program, students will have had every opportunity to earn their CPR certification for the professional rescuer, be a Certified First Responder, and be certified in AED and competent in hazardous materials awareness.

In addition, successful students have an opportunity to earn dual college at Prairie State Junior College.

KACC's Fire Rescue program is set to follow the State of Illinois Fire Marshall’s Office Division of Standards for entry level fire, rescue, and emergency medical fields.

Following the IFSTA Fire Fighting Essential Manual, first year students will learn the basics of the fire service profession. Students will learn how to use self-contained breathing apparatus, ropes and knots, ladders and hoses.  Using a special smoke trailer students will be exposed to simulated fire conditions under a safe environment. Not only do our students learn how to do a search and rescue, they also learn auto extrication, and how to safely remove victims from automobile crashes.

Second-year students begin honing in on their leadership skills training, training as a company officer and Incident Commander.

These second-year students also learn how to operate a fire pump with our on-site fire department pumper.  Students will be engaged in Hazardous Materials for the First Responder, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED Training programs.

In the course of their second year, successful students will have the opportunity to participate in KACC's  internship program with area fire departments.

All classes follow the standards of the Illinois State Fire Marshall, Illinois Department of Public Health, and Department of Transportation.
