Former Student Returns
Welding Class Has Great Example
Albert Einstein once said "Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others; it is the only means."
The KACC welding students were fortunate to have an excellent example of what paying attention and working hard in class can do for their future. Nick Desile, former KACC welding student, came to the Career Center on December 18th to speak with students about his career with the US Navy.
Nick is in his fourth year with the Navy. He joined the Navy right after 911 and now runs a welding shop on board his ship. Nick is certified for nuclear work as well. Currently stationed in Washington State, Nick continues to call Kankakee County his home.
For 26 years of age, Nick demonstrated a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge in the area of welding. The Naval training is intense to say the least, with one of his programs he completed having a 60 percent failure rate. He certainly is the cream of the crop.

Not only were stories shared, students were privy as to why Nick believes they need to work very hard while here at KACC with Mr. Spangler and hopefully, if they are serious about a career in welding, continue on at KACC, or perhaps apply for a trade union apprenticeship, and of course, there is always the Navy, which has been an exceptional opportunity, taking him all over the world, including Iraq, Europe, Africa, etc.
Following his presentation, Nick changed out of his Naval uniform and joined the students to demonstrate and share knowledge of welding techniques.
Mr. Spangler is extremely proud of students like Nick. He says he keeps in touch with many of his students and lets his current class know "Career opportunities in welding are incredible. There are so many options and opportunities for not only a great career, but also making a great living financially."
Thanks, Nick, for coming back to see us here at KACC!
