Christi Mayer
Artistic, even in her teaching style.
Christi Mayer says she's had the love and desire to design hair as far back as she can remember. It is a very artistic field and it was a tough challenge to get where she is today. No matter the circumstance, Mrs. Mayer worked hard enough to conquer anything which stood in her way to fulfill her dream.
Mrs. Mayer went to high school in Urbana, Illinois. When she was a junior, she was able to mix her school day with a vocational education program. Mrs. Mayer attended Beau Monde Beauty School in Champaign for her vocational education and beauty school. "Vocational education," says Mrs. Mayer, "uses all of the knowledge you gain from high school and enhances the academic skills learned there in order to fully learn the necessary curriculum in your vocational training." There is certainly a need to do well in math, chemistry, anatomy and English, all of which go along with an artistic talent to becoming a licensed cosmetologist.
Following school, Mrs. Mayer met and married her husband, who is a brake-man/conductor. Due to his job, Mrs. Mayer had to say good-bye to her home town and moved away from Urbana. During those years, she continued to work at two salons and loved being around young people.
Because it was evident Ms. Mayer loved working with young people and was a talented cosmetologist, she was contacted by none-other than a former teacher at Trendsetters in Bradley. She contacted Mrs. Mayer to offer her a position as a Cosmetology Instructor at KACC in Bourbonnais. Mrs. Mayer was delighted to receive the offer then - - and says she still continues to be happy here at KACC - six years later.
In the Cosmetology classroom, creativity and camaraderie are in the air. Her students learn about the different angles, directions, natural fall, and projections of different types of hair. Everyday students come and Mrs. Mayer loves to watch them learn and grow. This is one of Mrs. Mayer's greatest delights and hopes she is a big part in the way her students develop and go on to be successful in their careers.
Mrs. Mayer says she focuses on how some of her students learn. "The human brain has many different ways of storing information," says Mrs. Mayer. "Some student learn better visually, some from a book and some verbally." Mrs Mayer continued stating her teaching style utilizes "varied techniques so students with varied characteristics in her classroom can learn more."
All Mrs. Mayer asks of her students is to be motivated in what they are doing. Students who show no motivation is her pet peeve. Mrs. Mayer hopes be able to lead her students and have them learn to express and develop their own true qualities within.
Mrs. Mayer's motivation for being who she is now is her love of working in a salon. It's an artistic field and as students come and go, it creates a brand new chapter in her life every new school year.
