Building a Bright Future!

KACC students have done it again!  More scholarships have been awarded. This time, the two winners are young men in our Construction Technology Program.

Instructors Jeff Umphrey and Doug Enz were delighted to announce their students Miles Maricle, a senior at BBCHS, and Doug Dandurand, a senior at Momence High School won the Home Builders Association of Kankakee (HBAK) Scholarship awards.   These $1,000 awards will come in mighty handy for Miles and Doug as they go off to college to study construction management at Parkland College and ISU respectively.

Mr. Enz described Miles by saying, "He is an excellent student and comes to class ready to learn and lend a helping hand.  He has an excellent attitude and is very well disciplined.  No matter what the task, he always gives 100%.  Miles is very dependable, honest and hard working."

Mr. Umphrey had some very nice comments about Doug, writing "Doug has been a group leader both as a junior and senior student.  He is respected by his fellow students. In recognition of his abilities, Doug was named Student of the Quarter and is the Student of the Year at KACC for the Construction Program.  Not only does Doug possess the attitude and abilities and work ethics, his dedication to his studies has earned him straight "A's" in our program. He is an exceptional young man."

The awards were announced last week at the monthly HBAK meeting by Executive Director, Sally Schmidt. According to Ms. Schmidt, "Miles earned the designation of student of the month in  April of this year, and HBAK's student of the month once last year. He also participated in and won an architectural model-building competition sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Kankakee."

Ms. Schmidt continued, "Doug also won Student of the month and competed in the architectural model building.  On top of that", continued Ms. Schmidt, "Doug carries a GPA above the 4.0/A level. They're outstanding young men and I was very happy to make a visit to their schools to present the awards in front of their peers."

The HBAK Scholarship is in it's inaugural year.  The proceeds for the scholarship come directly from the annual Spring Home Improvement Show gate fee  in March.  They first thought the scholarship amount would be $500, but were extremely pleased to have additional funds to give away.

Ms. Schmidt says that she hopes to spread the word on the availability of the scholarship for those students who live in Kankakee County and are attending high school or Kankakee Community College in the building trades.
