An Eye for Design

Structure and Beauty Earn High Marks

April 21, 2009

The Construction Technology Program at Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) is currently in the process of building its 18th home.  Because students have an opportunity to learn both in the classroom and on the job site, they are always impressive when competition comes their way for designing and building a model home.

At the recent Home Improvement Show sponsored by the Homebuilders Association of Kankakee County (HBAK), area student participated in a model home contest.

The top-three homes designed were done so by 5 top-notch students of the KACC Construction Technology Program.

Winning first place was the home designed by Devin Redus and A.J. Homan from Beecher High School.  Their two story home with detached garage was so beautifully detailed, not only could you take off the roof, but as pictures show, the roof, second story and then first story were all able to be removed to expose the home all the way to its foundation.  They even made sure the garage coach lights worked for a little curb appeal and ambiance.

In second place was the home designed and built by Jordan Warner.  For a ranch home, Jordan made sure there were interesting roof lines for a very attractive elevation.  It would be fabulous if a picture did his shingled roof justice, but it just cant.  The floor plan and roof trusses were well planned and constructed.

Third place winners, Joe Wehling from Momence High School and Logan Kortkamp, from Beecher High School did a wonderful job on their design/build.  How the judges were able to determine between the places, this writer has no idea.   All three (and many other homes) were really exceptional.

KACC instructors, Jeff Umphrey and Doug Enz stated they are grateful for the effort put forth from their students and of course, the HBAK who sponsored the event.   HBAK also features students of the month at their regular meetings and provides scholarship opportunities for those who will pursue college/university studies in the construction field.
