Remmert Studios Owner Shares Software Tips

Furniture designer and owner of Remmert Studios, Steve Remmert, came to meet with the Drafting + 3D Design students.   This was a real privilege to have someone of Mr. Remmert's caliber come to the Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) and share his expertise with the class.

Remmert Studios, a local company specializing in the design and fabrication of church furniture, utilizes the Google Sketch Up, a 3D modeling program. The timing of his visit was very fortunate, as our drafting students have been working on the design and development of a small house utilizing the Sketch Up software.

Mr. Remmert spoke of his work and the various aspects he believes to be the utmost of importance to his success which include having

  • a good understanding of furniture standards,
  • ability to utilize technology to its fullest potential, and;
  • the ability to listen closely in order to best understand the client's goals for the finished product.

Google Sketch Up, according to Mr. Remmert, is a  vital part of his design process, from the initial concepts to client meetings and on into the dimensioned fabrication drawings.

Given that Mr. Remmert uses Sketch Up so extensively, he also took some time to show the students drafting shortcuts, tricks and tips to help achieve maximum productivity and efficiency in drawing, thus freeing up more time for design study and development.

This visit was yet another great example of our business community and the Kankakee Area Career Center working together to strengthen and enhance our students' learning experience.  It also demonstrates the software programs utilized at KACC are the same as those utilized in the real world, which is in line with our motto "Preparing Students for Tomorrow."

Thanks to Remmert Studios for being so generous in sharing talent and time!
