KACC Law Enforcement Instructor

Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) is delighted to welcome Don Barber to our faculty.

Mr. Barber comes from a Law Enforcement family.   His father served our community as a Kankakee City Police Officer.  Mr. Barber must have found his father's career appealing because he sure made his own strides having a successful career in Law Enforcement.  Mr. Barber worked for the Village of Bradley Police Department for 30 years, retiring as sergeant. KACC is pleased Mr. Barber has chosen to share his knowledge, experience and talents with our students.

In the realm of education, Mr. Barber is a life-long learner.  He doesn't stop.  Mr. Barber earned an Associates Degree in Law enforcement and continued on with his education, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Management.  Mr. Barber also participated in other professional development and educational opportunities, graduating from Staff and Command School through Northwestern University.  He is currently seeking his Masters Degree in Criminal Justice through Lewis University.

Throughout his career, Mr. Barber was actively engaged in a variety of police duties.  He is extremely well-rounded.  He worked patrol and was involved as a gang specialist as well as a juvenile officer.  Mr. Barber was also involved with tactics, and served as an instructor for several tactical training programs like Master Firearms Instructor and Rapid Deployment Instructor.

Mr. Barber was also a trained undercover drug agent, crime scene technician and a certified lead homicide investigator.  He has worked on and successfully charged several murders  - including a 20 year old cold case murder.

Mr. Barber - On the job

On the lighter side, Mr. Barber has been involved in community activities and outreach programs.  Mr. Barber was instrumental in pioneering the first senior citizen police academy in Kankakee County which educates senior citizens on how NOT to become a victim.  Mr. Barber was also heavily involved, in the development of the current county-wide National Night Out program hosted at the Perry Farm complex.  The National Night Out program is a preventative crime educational event which is free to the whole community.  This event has understandably grown over the years.

Mr. Barber joined KACC faculty following the retirement of Janice Krizik.  Ms. Krizik, along with another former instructor, John Sandusky developed the current foundation of the Law Enforcement Program.  Since Mr. Barber arrived, he has continued to build upon the fundamentals while implementing more reality-based training where students actively "do" or "act out" scenarios.  Mr. Barber's efforts have also led to KACC having 2 squad cars donated to KACC to be used for training purposes.

It is a sure bet Mr. Barber will do all he can to fulfill the motto of the Kankakee Area Career Center - Preparing Students for Tomorrow!
