KACC Law Enforcement Instructor

Don Barber joined Team KACC in 2014.  At that time, he had retired from the Bradley Police Department. He brought with him a tremendous background and on-the-job experience.  His professional work experience continues to this day as  Mr. Barber, aka,  Chief Barber, is Aroma Park's Chief of Police.

Law Enforcement runs strong in Mr. Barber's family. Growing up, he saw his father's work as a Kankakee City Police Officer.  He must have found his father's career appealing as he followed in his dad's footsteps as a police officer.  Mr. Barber has had and continues to have a very successful career in Law Enforcement.  Before becoming Chief of Police for Aroma Park, Mr. Barber worked for the Village of Bradley Police Department.  He worked there for 30 years, retiring as sergeant.

In the realm of education, Mr. Barber is a life-long learner.  He does not stop.  Mr. Barber after earning an Associates Degree in law enforcement, he continued his education, getting his Bachelor's Degree in Management.  Mr. Barber is one of those who continues to take advantage of other professional development and educational opportunities.  He is a graduate of the Staff and Command School through Northwestern University, and most recently became A.L.I.C.E. Certified.

Throughout his career, Mr. Barber was actively engaged in a variety of police duties.  He is extremely well-rounded.  From working patrol , to gang specialist to a juvenile officer, he's done it all.  Mr. Barber was also involved with tactics, and served as an instructor for several tactical training programs like Master Firearms Instructor and Rapid Deployment Instructor.

Mr. Barber has also worked as a trained undercover drug agent, crime scene technician and a certified lead homicide investigator.  He has worked on and successfully charged several murders  - including a 20 year old cold case murder.

On the lighter side, Mr. Barber has been involved in community activities and outreach programs.  Mr. Barber was instrumental in pioneering the first senior citizen police academy in Kankakee County, educating senior citizens on how NOT to become a victim.  Mr. Barber was also heavily involved in developing the county-wide National Night Out program hosted at the Perry Farm. National Night Out is designed as a preventative crime educational event -  free to the whole community.

Mr. Barber continues his involvement within the community.  He is currently a member of Teen Court and is an elected Trustee for the Village of Bradley.

Since Mr. Barber joined KACC, he has continued to build upon the fundamentals of law enforcement all while implementing more reality-based training and technologies.  Between the Shoot-Don't Shoot Software, securing donation of squad cars, golf cart and glasses to mimic DUI, students can now actively participate in or act-out a wide range of  scenarios.  Mr. Barber's efforts have also led to KACC students having a greater opportunity to earn certifications and dual college credit.

It is a sure bet Mr. Barber will do all he can to fulfill the motto of the Kankakee Area Career Center - Preparing Students for Tomorrow!
