Busy 1st Quarter for Law Enforcement Students

First quarter for KACC Law Enforcement students went by like a flash!

Instructor, Don Barber, incorporated a wide variety of activities into his curriculum.  These activities compliment what is learned in the classroom.  On a regular basis, Mr. Barber reaches out to his professional law enforcement contacts to bring expertise to the classroom.

So far this year, students have:

  • Toured the Jerome Combs Detention Center and learned about careers in corrections
  • Spent time at the Kankakee Armory for a realistic training opportunity with the A.L.E.S.A. Officers (an elite group of officers, comprised from around the area, who are at the ready to be deployed for special circumstances like crowd control for demonstrations, natural disaster issues, etc.).  Our own Mr. Barber was an A.L.E.S.A. officer when he was on the police force and was deployed following hurricane Katrina.
  • Had a visit from Special Agent Jeff Marshall, with the ATF, who spent time with students and spoke about weaponry and tools utilized by their department.
  • Created mock employment applications and underwent mock job interviews with Ron Jackson.  Mr. Jackson also provided a wonderful presentation revolving around the "soft skills" employers want today and discussed the importance of making a good first impression. Mr. Jackson was kind enough to share his personal story with the students, giving them insight on how to overcome adversity and work hard toward a bright future.
  • Kankakee County Canine Officers brought their highly-trained dogs to the Career Center.  The dogs performed search activities as well as attack maneuvers.  While the dogs are absolutely gorgeous, they are completely engaged and will respond immediately to their master's command and are not to be trifled with!

These are but a few examples of the variety of activities to compliment what is learned in the classroom setting.  Mr. Barber and his Law Enforcement Assistant, Josh Martin, continue pursuing opportunities for real-world training opportunities for their students.
