KACC Law Enforcement and Fire-Rescue-EMR Students welcomed two visitors from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Department; Special Agent Jeff Marshall and his incredibly well-trained arson dog,

Along with Zelda, Special Agent Marshall brought long guns and a variety of other weaponry for students to examine.  "This opportunity is rare for high school students, where they can inspect, hold and handle unloaded weaponry and equipment in a high school setting.  Opportunities like these help us fulfill our motto "Preparing Student for Tomorrow,"  stated Instructor, Don Barber.

Agent Marshall has been coming to the Career Center for several years, donating his time and educating students on how to become a Federal Agent. He highlights the educational path and having the right temperamant to work in this field.

Agent Marshall speaks a great deal on gun safety, safe neighborhoods projects and illegal trafficking of tobacco products and alcohol, along with arson investigations on commercial structures.

Zelda, Special Agent Marshall's arson dog, was a great addition and a big reason why the Fire-Rescue-EMR students were invited to share the classroom with Law Enforcement students.Agent Marshall demonstrated how Zelda tracks and sniffs out accelerants on clothing and charred debris left at a fire scene.  Agent Marshall also spoke to the students about fire investigations and evidence handling.

Some student comments included:

  • "The class was very informative and Agent Marshall was very knowledgeable." Brody Kelley, BBCHS.
  • "The class showed me a different facet of policing in general.  The dog was amazing and cute." Neyda Molina, Kankakee High School.
  • "The Class was very interesting with the different weapons used in policing.  Zelda was great and the accuracy of her identifying odors was cool." Carrie Vangilder, Herscher High School.

The pictures below will give a glimpse into what a great day this was for the Law and Fire students.
