Bourbonnais Fire Protection District to the Aide of KACC Curriculum - Again!

Story image 1_0

KACC Fire-Rescue-EMS students once again had the opportunity to experience the real world of work as they practiced building search techniques in a vacant home used by the Bourbonnais Fire Protection District for similar training.

The students entered the house: each one wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. In order to simulate the smoke which firefighters encounter at fires, their vision was obscured by inserting waxed paper into their face pieces. This technique gives them a safe way to experience what can most certainly be a dangerous situation.

As with a professional fire fighter, students crawled in teams of two and three - on their hands and knees, simulating high-heat conditions - throughout the entire structure, in an attempt to locate potential occupants in the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen areas.

What did our students think about this fantastic opportunity?  Here are some examples of their comments following the training day:

  • Provided good practice for doing search in an actual occupancy.  This was the most realistic search we have ever done. - L. Gibson
  • Fun day. We worked well as a team and I learned a lot - Z. Krenkle
  • You have to be aware of your surroundings when you enter a building. - C. Kahoe
  • It was a fun time. Hope to do it again - T. Armstrong
  • It was tough not being able to see - D. Matuszewski
  • It was fun and realistic.  It was also a challenge going into a building that we didn't know. - K. Puffer
  • This learning experience made me realize just how much is required of firefighters. - L. Angelus
  • The experience was good and much needed skills were learned. - B. Crull
  • It was fun and I was able to use some of the skills I learned in class. - J. Walls
