The design process, which includes research, concept sketches, review, and refined sketches and computer aided drafting (CAD) allows design professionals to take their ideas and transfer them to drawings and specifications. These processes enable builders and fabricators to construct the product, which can be anything!

Buildings, pistons, engines, furniture, appliances, cars, video games, and manufacturing – the design process applies to everything you see in the world, making Drafting + 3D Design valuable no matter your profession.

The Drafting + 3D Design program at the Career Center is a two-year program offered to juniors and seniors – Students whose schedules allow only 1 year are absolutely welcome too.

Drafting + 3D Design students learn the fundamentals of the design process used by architects and engineers, and how sketching aids that process.  Students have an opportunity to work independently, on team projects and, work on collaborative projects with other Career Center programs.

During the first year, the program focuses initially on sketching and AutoCAD. Students learn how to sketch and draft both two and three-dimensional geometric shapes.  They then move on to sketching more complex drawings of houses, machine parts and other architectural and engineering designs. Students learn computer aided drafting utilizing Sketch Up and AutoCAD software programs in addition to learning how to operate and utilize our 3D Printers applying TinkerCAD, AutoCAD, Thingiverse and SolidWorks.

Second-year students may choose to focus on an engineering or architecture drafting and design.  Students even have an opportunity to be chosen for a job shadowing or potential internship with professionals in their field of interest. Students will become more proficient in AutoCAD and will learn to use 3D software programs utilized by Engineers (Solid Works) and Architects (Revit). During this second year, use of the 3D printers will be more intensive and geared toward problem solving, design of custom parts and assemblies, and printing more complex objects.

DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES: Students who successfully complete the first year may have an opportunity to earn 4 hours dual credit with Kankakee Community College for “COGT2114 – Computer Aided Drafting I.”  Students from Beecher High School and Crete Monee High School may have an opportunity to earn 3 dual credit hours from Prairie State College for CADMD 243: Intro to AutoCAD.

WHAT THE FUTURE MAY BRING

When a student does well, the possibility of a rewarding career utilizing drafting is great.  Most students who finish our program continue their education at a two or four-year college/ university. While there are positions available in the drafting arena for non-college educated students, students can expect more job opportunities and a substantial wage increase when they choose to further their education.
