Fire-Rescue-EMS Visits Limestone Fire Station
The Fire/Rescue/EMS class recently took a field trip to the Limestone Township Fire Station. The trip was timed to coincide with their study of fire department budgets and finances. In class, students are taught about the funding mechanisms of fire departments, and the impact of public funds such as property and sales taxing districts.
Students soon came to realize that these taxes are typically not enough to provide for all the programs, services, tools and equipment needed. Students learned that most fire departments conduct additional fundraisers to supplement funding shortfalls.
It just so happened the Limestone Township FPD was preparing for their annual Chicken BBQ when the students arrived. KACC students were able to get an up close and personal view of the extra effort firefighters put forth to raise money to benefit the people they serve.
Today's firefighters are expected to do more than just fight fires. They spend many hours off-duty at the fire station, performing tasks that while not as exciting as fighting fires, are just as critical to meeting their mission of protecting lives and property. KACC students pitched in, assembling boxes for take-out chicken meals. Students also packaged applesauce, coleslaw, and cookies for each dinner. They washed fire apparatus for those attending to view.
