Fire-Rescue-EMS Students visit Preschool Lab
Fire Prevention week in the US is celebrated in October - during the week in which October 9th falls. Why October 9th? Fire Prevention Week is observed in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire which started on October 8, 1871.
According to NFPA.org, during the course of the Great Chicago Fire, 100,000 people were left homeless, 250 people were killed and more than 17,400 structures burned over 2,000 acres of land. A national observance of Fire Prevention week was proclaimed in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge.
KACC Fire-Rescue-EMS observed in great style - spending time in the Preschool Lab, utilizing demonstrations, activities and information sharing to help teach our 3 to 5 year-olds about fire prevention and safety.
According to Fire-Rescue-EMS Instructor, Ed Leeson, "Public education programs play an important role in getting safety messages out." His students taught lessons such as The Firefighter is your Friend; Stop, Drop and Roll; What's Hot, What's Not; Get Out, Stay Out; Crawl Low Under Smoke; and, Matches and Lighters are Tools, Not Toys."
The preschool children seemed to respond favorably and enjoy the presentations. By the end of the day, they seemed to understand the messages and be much more comfortable in the presence of firefighter students. Photographs embedded in this article demonstrate how much our KACC Fire-Rescue-EMS students enjoyed this worthwhile project. Click on any photo and several more will become available for you to view.
