Health Occupations II

Course Information

The majority of students entering the Health Occupations II program will have already successfully completed all Illinois State requirements for CNA Certification. This program, taught by a Registered Nurse (RN), will prepare students for their continued education at a community or four-year college/university level in the following healthcare fields:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Medical Technologist
  • Radiology
  • EMT - Basic
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Respiratory Therapy

During the second year of the program, student performance is learned and practiced in both the classroom and, if the student elects to and meets requirements, may work closely with mentors in a local healthcare facility through a clinical internship experience. Students will also become CPR certified and study medical terminology in the classroom.  Students will learn how to identify medical terms by analyzing their components in addition to the study of anatomy and physiology. Emphasis is placed on defining medical prefixes, root words, suffixes and abbreviations. 

DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Following successful completion of Health Occupations II, students each 2 Semester Credit Hours for course HLTH1312: Medical Terminology, at Kankakee Community College: Peotone Students earn 3 dual credit hours for BIO 100: Medical Terminology at Joliet Junior College; and, for Beecher and Crete Monee Students, 1 credit hour for HLTH 105: Medical Terminology at Prairie State College.

REQUIRED/RECOMMENDED TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:

      Health Occupations II:

  • Pocket Notebook
  • Spiral Notebook
  • 3-ring Binder with dividers
  • Pens
  • If involved in an internship...
    • Watch (must have second hand)
    • Uniform (if involved in clinical internship)
    • Appropriate shoes as required by assigned Internship Program
    • TB Test (Two-step) must be done prior to the beginning of the school year.  Students are to bring their results of the test to their instructors when they begin class. These can be performed at the Kankakee County Public Health Department or your personal physician’s office.
    • Drug Screen is a requirement of the medical facilities in which clinical hours are earned.

All second-year students who engage in an internship program must have transportation and proof of current auto and health insurance.  Students must also maintain a “B” average in order to remain in the internship program.
