Medical Terminology & Basic Health Skills

Course Information

This course is a multi-faceted course, designed not only to offer a college-level Medical Terminology component, but also proivde students with a with a sequence of organized learning experiences and skills to prepare a person to recognize the signs and symptoms of illness and injury.  Student willhave a chance to learn the approved and appropriate life-support procedures such as cardiopulmonary resucitation (CPR) and will become First Aid/Heartsavers certified through the American Heart Association. 

Studens learn how to identify medial terms by ahnalyzing their components.  emphasis is placed on defining medial prefixes, root words, suffixes and abbreviations. Focus is placed on the development of both oral and written skills in the language used to communicate within the healthcare professions.

Many students entering the Medical Terminology & Basic Health Skills program will have already successfully completed all Illinois State requirements for CNA Certification. These second-year students may have an opportunity to participate in an internship program at a local healthcare facility and put their CNA certification in practice.

The content of this course will be beneficial to anyone who is considering a career as a:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Medical Technologist
  • Radiologist
  • EMT - Basic
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Respiratory Therapist

 

DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES:

Following successful completion of Medical Terminology & Basic Health Skills, students may have the opportunity to earn dual college credit:

Kankakee County            KCC for HLTH1312: Medical Terminology, 
Beecher/Crete Students,  Prairie State for HLTH 105: Medical Terminology

REQUIRED/RECOMMENDED TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:

  • Notebook, 3-ring binder with dividers
  • Notebook Paper
  • Pens and Pencils
  • 3 x 5 Index Cards
  • Headphones

If involved in an internship...

  • Watch (must have second hand)
  • Uniform as required by Internship Program
  • Appropriate shoes as required by assigned Internship Program
  • TB Test (Two-step) must be done prior to the beginning of the school year.  Students are to bring their results of the test to their instructors when they begin class. These can be performed at the Kankakee County Public Health Department or your personal physician’s office.
  • Drug Screen is a requirement of the medical facilities in which clinical hours are earned.

All second-year students who engage in an internship program must provide their own transportation, proof of current auto and health insurances current CPR card. Students must also maintain a “B” average in order to remain in the internship program.
