Melinda Hogan, KACC Career Coach

Melinda Hogan, KACC Career Coach

One of many unique opportunities available to students at the Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) is having access to a Career Coach. Melinda Hogan is one of two Career Coaches on site at KACC.

Mrs. Hogan says she “knew her prayers had been answered” when she was offered the position of Career Coach at KACC. Timing was perfect. She had recently retired from Reed-Custer and says she “just wasn’t ready to retire.”

Mrs. Hogan brings 34 years of experience and expertise in education to KACC.  Not only was she a family consumer science teacher, she was the Cooperative Vocational Coordinator and the Teaching Internship Supervisor at Reed-Custer High School in Braidwood, Illinois.

Mrs. Hogan is a County West native. She graduated from Reddick High School (now part of the Herscher School District).  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University and her Masters of Education in Vocational Education from the University of Illinois.  Mrs. Hogan also holds a Masters of Arts in Educational Administration from Governors State University.

Mrs. Hogan’s expertise led to her receiving the Outstanding New Home Economics Teacher award by the Illinois Association of Career and Technical Educators as Outstanding New Home Economics Teacher in Illinois.  She received the Those Who Excel Teacher of the Year award by Illinois State Board of Education.

Mrs. Hogan made mention of not being ready to retire.  This is very evident as she continues an active role in several professional organizations: Illinois Association of Career and Technical Educators; Illinois Family and Consumer Science Teachers Association; and, Delta Kappa Gamma International.  Mrs. Hogan is also an adjunct professor at Olivet Nazarene University in the Department of Family and Consumer Science. If that is not enough, she also serves as a Youth 4-H Leader and Volunteer.

According to Mrs. Hogan, being a career coach is a “perfect fit.” She pairs her career and technical knowledge with her educational experience; helping KACC students develop their portfolios their interview skills. She says she enjoys seeing the “light bulb” go on when students make the connection between their classroom activities/skills and the real-world preparation they receive creating their career portfolio.  “It’s especially satisfying when students thank us for our help when they use their portfolios to receive scholarships and employment.”

Mrs. Hogan says that she is fortunate to have found a new “family” through the KACC administration, staff and students.  It does take a village to help students become successful. “I am so impressed with the caliber and professionalism of the instructors and staff. The students are the future and I am fortunate to be part of this positive community.”

In her free time, Mrs. Hogan has many hobbies including being a “lifelong” learner, traveling, reading, culinary adventures, and health and fitness. Her family includes her husband, Dan, and three sons and daughter-in-law, Matt, Laura, Will and Jack.
