SkillsUSA’s mission is “to empower members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American Citizens.” How nicely this fits with KACC’s motto: Preparing Students for Tomorrow!

Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) students have once again chosen to become members of SkillsUSA and represent KACC for the 2020 State, and hopefully, National competitions.

The SkillsUSA series of student competitions is incredibly tough.  There are written qualifying tests, skills demonstrative qualifying tests, and series of competitions to be held at SkillsUSA Illinois State Convention in April.

TeamKACC is supported by our SkillsUSA Student Advisors:  Michael Johnston, Law Enforcement Instructor; Melissa Kapidis, Early Childhood Education/Preschool Lab Instructor; Dawn Kleber, Automotive Technology Teacher Assistant; and, Jami Meredith, Medical Terminology/CNA Training Program Teacher Assistant, and Jonathon Cruz, Student Intern.

To date, 50 KACC students joined SkillsUSA Illinois.  Thirty-five of those students will be taking a written test on their specific competition area on Friday, February 14th.  Of those 35 students, those earning top-ten finishes in the State will move on the April SkillsUSA Convention.

Seventeen students will be traveling to Elgin Community College to participate in a Regional Conference on March 6th to earn the designation of a State Competitor. These students are dedicated – knowing they have to arrive at 5:15 a.m. to catch their bus to Elgin.

Law Enforcement program will be sending three CSI Teams to State Competitions.  They have begun meeting Saturday morning here at KACC to practice and fine-tune their skills.

Construction Technology program will be sending a Construction Tech Team as well.  These students are gaining great ground in their skill development by being on our KACC House 22 Construction Site!  Mr. Umphrey and Mr. Enz will make sure they are very prepared!

All of us at KACC wish TeamKACC good luck with their upcoming qualifying tests and competitions.  Let’s get to Springfield!
