A note from Gina Horn

Owner Meraki Nail Bar, Frankfort

Hearing from former students absolutely never gets old.  Learning where their hard work, dedication and KACC education has taken them is very fulfilling.  Former Cosmetology student, Gina Horn, dropped an email note of reflection which we wanted to share:

I NEVER imagined being a nail technician. I always wanted to do something with art, but never thought it would be on a tiny canvas.

At 15 years old, I told my mother I didn’t want to go to college. So as a back up plan, she signed me up for cosmetology. I have three sisters, so I grew up always braiding hair and painting everyone’s nails in the house (including the dogs' nails).

At 18 years old, I passed the State Cosmetology Licensure exam four months after graduation from Manteno High School. About six months later, I got a nail tech job in Manteno, working while attending college. A year later I quit to work at a day care facility and traveled to clients houses. I did this for two years while I saved my money because I knew one day I would be ready to get back into a salon or have my own studio one day.

Shortly after admitting to myself that I was ready to have a salon career again, a friend contacted me about a retiring nail tech who was looking for the right person to take over her clients. It was a once in a life time opportunity so I met with her, and began working along side of her to learn her products, and her way of doing things for her clients. I knew if I approached it this way, it wouldn’t be a drastic change for these women who have been going to her for the last 10-15 years.

This opportunity taught me new techniques, allowed me to meet beautiful souls I’ll always remember, and learn the pro and cons of the booth-rent operation. From working in three different salons and traveling to clients' homes, I knew the salon life was not for me.

With the motivation, support, and courage from my family, friends, and clients I was able to open my own studio March 1st, 2019 in Frankfort, IL. Meraki Nail Bar was a dream that turned into reality through which I will continue to learn, grow, and become a better business owner, nail technician, and friend to my clients so I could fulfill their needs to their highest expectations. I made it a year and it was more than I could’ve ever imagined at 24 years old.

Thanks Gina!
