Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Curriculum is unique at the Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) in the area of who is eligible to attend.  This program accepts both Junior and Senior students from KACC's participating high schools, of course.  What is unique is that the program is also available to high school graduates who have a desire to enter into the field of cosmetology.

Cosmetologists help their customers maintain a healthy and attractive look by shaping, setting and tinting hair, providing manicures, scalp and facial treatments.  They even provide make-up analysis, clean and style wigs and hair pieces.

The KACC School of Cosmetology program is a Pivot Point member school and provides the training necessary to become a licensed cosmetologist.

KACC Cosmetology students have the opportunity to acquire skills performed on customers in our clinic area which serves the general public.  The clinic has been open for numerous years and has a long list of clients who frequent the salon.

The Cosmetology program is under the instruction of teachers licensed by the department of professional regulation and will comply with all the rules and regulations of the Illinois Beauty Culture Act.  The program provides for 1500 hours of training, which is the minimum requirement to meet prior to taking the Illinois State Board Exam for licensing.

Units of instruction included in the program are shampooing, make-up, facials, hair treatment, hairdressing and shaping, hair chemistry, manicuring, pedicuring, sculpture nails and permanent waving/chemical straightening.

The program includes two full schools years, Saturday hours, summer session between junior and senior year, and approximately 4 weeks during the summer following high school graduation.

REQUIRED TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:

Students are responsible for purchasing an equipment kit for the first year, second year, and for the summer programs.  the items provided in these kits are required to progress in the class.  Kit fees are always due on or before the first day of class for each semester and/or summer session. The kits meet industry standards and are sold at KACC's cost.  Considering the kits are mandatory and an essential part of the curriculum, a student will not be enrolled, nor will they be abel to earn hours toward their cosmetology license until appropriate fees are paid.  Kit fees are:

  • First year kit $300
  • Second year kit $400
  • Summer session kit $190

There is an additional lab fee cost for the cosmetology program of $45 per year.

Many KACC Cosmetology students choose to participate in competitions at the local, state and national level.  If they do, they may need to purchase additional mannequins, supplies, and pay for entry fees and travel costs.
