Chemistry in Cosmetology
KACC Phase I Cosmetology students began a chapter on Chemistry. It may sound weird to many, but Chemistry does, in fact, help the stylist use a variety of products to improve the personal well-being of the client.
This past week, student learned all about matter. The three forms of matter (solid, liquid and gas) were reviewed. To delve more into the subject, students were instructed to demonstrate and witness the 3 forms as they experimented using the liquid (vinegar), solid (baking soda) to create the gas - blowing up balloons. This project helped students learn how objects of matter and how they can chemically change.
Students then moved on to learn more in-depth about elements, atoms and bonds. To reinforce what was learned in class, student formed groups and created a hair structure in the most basic form - starting with the smallest component - the atom. They used objects located around the classroom as well as objects brought from home to finish their models.
When it comes to Cosmetology - the students will learn much more about chemistry and, of course biology. There is much more to becoming a professional cosmetologist than having the ability to perform a haircut, manicure or pedicure. There is much, much more in-depth knowledge our students must gain over these next two years.
