Fire-Rescue-EMS Students and Bourbonnais Fire Protection District Team Up Yet Again
Wonderful Partner in Education
Students enrolled in the Fire/Rescue/EMS curriculum at the Kankakee Area Career Center assisted the Bourbonnais Fire Protection District in erecting cubicles designed to compare the burning characteristics of a room protected by fire sprinklers to a room with no protection at all.
The rooms will be outfitted with similar furnishings and then ignited. Comparisons will be made between a room built of wood walls and one with drywall.
Fire growth stages and behavior will also be observed.
These demonstrations help prove the value of fire sprinklers in reducing damage and saving lives by their timely application of water. Would you rather have an automatic fire sprinkler activate when a fire is small, and control it by discharging 15-25 gallons of water per minute, giving you time to get out of the building? Or , do you want to have the fire department arrive after the fire has grown out of control and spray 250 gallons per minute?
Once the fires in the rooms have been extinguished, fire investigators then can use the props to help train in determining the cause and origin of the fires.
