Stop The Bleed Training
Thanks to Nick Gliwa and Grant Park Fire Department for providing KACC Fire-Rescue-EMR students with Stop The Bleed and control hemorrhaging training. Being in an emergency situation where there is no one to quickly and effectively stop bleeding is one of the most preventable causes of death in non-fatally wounded people.
Mr. Gliwa is not only a certified Rescue Task Force and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care Provider and member of the Grant Park Fire Department; he is also a former KACC Fire-Rescue-EMR student. Mr. Gliwa graduated from KACC and Grant Park High School in 2019. It is extra-special for current students to learn from a young professional like Mr. Gliwa. Students can see for themselves the opportunities following high school and the many educational paths to a bright future.
Mr. Gliwa instructed students on how to pack wounds and apply direct pressure. He also worked with them to apply the emergency-Israeli bandage and tourniquets. These devices have been credited with saving hundreds of lives in such incidents as the Tuscon mass shooting in 2011, the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and countless other multi-victim incidents throughout the world.
Students began this training by learning proper application techniques. They were then allowed to practice application on one another. Please note, the tourniquets they used were designed specifically for training purposes. They are identical to the actual tourniquets they would use, but this design allows safe application without the required constricting force.
To add a sense of realism, students also practiced packing gauze in a leg wound while imitation blood was flowing.
Great job Nick Gliwa! KACC students learned a lot and can utilize the information, no matter what they choose as their future career.
