Thanks to Mr. John Bevis
Director, Kankakee County Health Department
KACC was yet again blessed to have the opportunity to partner with a local professional, giving students a better glimpse into the real world of work.
John Bevis, Director of Kankakee County Health Department spoke with students about the variety of departments within public health administration and the overall health department. Mr. Bevis spoke about the important topics of water sanitation, environmental issues, restaurant food safety, the opioid epidemic, etc.
Students were very interested in all the information he presented, especially when he shared some of the latest statistics about STD's locally and how it compares to national levels. Mr. Bevis provided everyone with printed information about the health department, their clinic and clinic services.
Of course, Mr. Bevis also spoke about the opioid crisis, relating some of the details surrounding some of the cases he has seen. He informed students there has been some grant money approved. The funds are to be used to educate the community at large about the use of Narcan - a drug used to counteract an opioid overdose.
KACC students completed a classroom assignment the day before Mr. Bevis gave his presentation. They were directed to read and share articles, and develop questions to become more educated about the opioid epidemic.
Workplace Excellence Suitability Module was a part of the mix. Students asked excellent questions and Mr. Bevis shared his interest in learning more about Workplace Excellence modules and the array of topics.
