Workplace Excellence - Adaptability
Ability to change in order to be successful in new and different business situations and work assignments.
The second Workplace Excellence (WPE) Series module offered school-wide this year is ADAPTability. Charles Darwin, summed it up stating "The most important factor in survival is neither intelligence nor strength but adaptability."
While we are certainly not teaching survival skills, KACC students have the unique benefit of learning what it means to be adaptable, assessing their own adaptability skill sets and learning how to become more adaptable - a key component to survival in job seeking, maintaining a job, and getting those promotions along the way as you establish your career.
Throughout this module, the reasons for being adaptable are discussed, like globalization of our workforce and changes in technology. Students take a closer look at the changing workforce and discuss and explore how it will impact their individual career areas. Discussions and activities on how to cope with and prepare for these changes are a part of the process.
Once students have assessed their own perception on how adaptable they are, they work with their instructor and fellow students to discern ways to improve their adaptability, like keeping things in perspective, being open to change and seeking help when needed.
There's even an excellent section on how building adaptability can help alleviate stress. The relationship between stress and adaptability is thoroughly reviewed with students learning about healthy and unhealthy ways to handle stress. Let's face it - everyone has stress - those who learn the skills for being adaptable and handling stress caused by change - rapid or not - tend to be more successful.
And that's what it's all really about - helping our students become successful individuals - no matter what career path they eventually take.
As we enter each new WPE module this semester, we will keep you updated so you know what we're learning as we are Preparing Students for Tomorrow!
