Deputy Zach Powell talking about some of the equipment used by public safety officers.

KACC Preschool students had a special visitor in class today.  Kankakee County Sheriff's Deputy, Zach Powell, spoke to students about his career in public safety.  He explained who he was, what a police officer does, and of course, tips for their own personal safety and a little 9-1-1 information to boot.

Deputy Powell brought some equipment to class and explained their uses and purpose.  Equipment included a helmet, flashlight (red and blue flashing), and a reflective vest.

There was one additional item he brought for all the children - a goodie bag from Sheriff Michael Downey.  These preschoolers, according to Deputy Powell, "liked the goodie bag the best!"  Maybe because they had coloring books, a junior deputy badge, wrist bands and a Frisbee.

The presentation was very worthwhile for the preschoolers.  They even received a bit of homework.  Each child was assigned to go home and learn one of their parent's full name and phone number....something every preschooler needs to know.

Part of good public safety is helping people be prepared in case of emergency.  Proper use of 9-1-1 system and learning parent names and phone numbers are just the beginning.

Thanks Deputy Powell for such a meaningful preschool public safety lesson.
