Tonya Born, Cosmetology Department Chair

Adult Cosmetology

Tonya Born, affectionately known in the classroom as Ms. Tonya, has been active in the Cosmetology industry since 1995.  She started her career at Trendsetters College and was so inspired by her mentor, she knew immediately she wanted to become an instructor. Ms. Tonya knew she wanted to share her passion and excitement with those around her.

Before joining the KACC team in 2016, Ms. Tonya had extensive training in all aspects of the Cosmetology industry.  She trained in Chicago, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Florida and Michigan. Ms. Tonya has had the opportunity to work backstage at hair shows with some of Paul Mitchell’s and Pivot Point’s very best, trained Cosmetologists. She become a Master Educator, Lead Curriculum writer, Competition Coach, and helped manage the schools in which she was involved.

Ms. Tonya is always eager to do community work and show her students how important it is to give back to your community. She has created many service opportunities while at KACC. She has arranged to take her students on field trips specifically designed as community service - always with a cosmetology influence, the last of which was serving homeless people with a fresh haircut and style.

Ms. Born never stops training and takes every opportunity she can to evolve herself and in turn, make a better learning experience for her students.

Cosmetology Instructors L to R: Gloria Hernandez, Tonya Born and Meghann Miller

Ms. Born originally joined KACC as the lead instructor for the Adult program.  She was promoted to Cosmetology Program Department Chair in August 2018. As with every responsibility she accepts, she has moved forward in a brisk manner - improving the salon, reorganizing adjoining rooms within the department and says she looks forward to "Growing the Cosmetology department and making positive changes to better the overall student experience."

Ms. Born says that she wants her students to be confident, caring, aware and proud of all the accomplishments they will achieve during their education at KACC.  She strives to make her students "Salon and industry ready," sharing the same love and passion she has for the world of Cosmetology.
