Welding Students Compete

Joe Anders, Cy Cook, Noah Fink and Jack Simpson

Chicago Pipefitters United Association #597 held their annual Welding Competition on Saturday.

KACC Welding Instructor, Michael Gall, accompanied four KACC students to participate in this competition. Representing the Kankakee Area Career Center were Cyrus Cook and Noah Fink from Iroquois West High School, Jake Simpson from Peotone High School and Joseph Anders from BBCHS.

This next sentence will only make sense to who know about welding, but from what I'm told, it provided a great piece of work to discern welding capabilities and score: The competition piece consisted of a 3 3/8 inch thick plates, 12 inches long, fashioned into a T-joint requiring a 5/16 inch weld of 7018 on one side and a single pass 6010 weld on the opposite side.  The final weld (a corner fashioned V-grove) consisted of a full penetration 6010 root pass with 7018 fill and cover.

Competitors were given two hours to compete the weld.

Our students fared well in the intermediate category.  Jake Simpson finished 7th, Noah Fink took 9th and Cy Cook took 13th. This Contest is extremely competitive.  Mr. Gall was very proud of these students.  They are really developing both the knowledge and skill sets needed for a fine career.
